Pictou County council is trying to figure out if it owns a piece of land in Hillside or if it belongs to a former school board.

A non-profit group in Hillside is interested in taking over the property that once was the location of the Hillside School, however, county staff said lawyers have discovered the property is divided into three separate parcels of land which means more research and possibly a survey needs to be done to resolve the issue of ownership.

In addition, county CAO Brian Cullen said there is no record of the deed that proves the Municipality of Pictou County owns the land and it is possible when the school closed the property was deeded back to the school board at the time.

He said considering there have been several school boards in place – both district and regional – since the school closed, more research is needed to determine if the land is owned by the province.
