The Shiretown’s entry in the Great Places in Canada contest finished as second runner-up for the People’s Choice Award.
The Pictou Lobster Carnival, which has its office in the former CN Station on Front Street, was entered in the contest in the Great Streets category.
Broadway in Orangeville, Ont., won both the Jury Prize and People’s Choice in the category, with Wolfville’s Main Street coming in as first runner-up.
The contest is organized by the Canadian Institute of Planners to celebrate the places that make communities unique. Other categories include Great Neighbourhood and Great Public Space.
The winners – chosen by seven professional planners – were announced on Wednesday, which was World Town Planning Day. While CIS members select the winner in each of the three categories, the People’s Choice award is given based on the number of online votes. More than 26,000 votes were cast during the contest.
