PICTOU – County council wants to know how it can improve internet service for its residents.

Coun. Darla MacKeil recommended Monday during a financial services meeting that council hire a consultant that would determine what is needed to improve internet coverage in rural Pictou County.

Coun. Ron Baillie questioned what council would do with the information after the consultants report was complete since improving internet is a provincial/ government issue, not municipal.

Coun. David Parker answered Baillie by saying that if the province comes looking for places to improve internet coverage, Pictou County will have its priority spots listed and ready to be serviced.

He said such improvements to technology will come with a high price tag for taxpayers but it could be over the span of eight to 10 years.

Warden Robert Parker echoed the thought saying that rural municipalities will have to pay part of the cost to improve internet service to get it done.
