RCMP Const. Blake Thornley was driving down Hwy 289 in Lansdowne when he came across some rather large runaways.
Five Belted Galloway cattle were on the road. Concerned that they might get struck by a vehicle on the road, he steered them down a dirt road nearby. The cattle then made their way to a yard with a pleasant view of the nearby body of water and happily munched on grass while RCMP officers tracked down the owners.
Hobby farmer Mark Wartak said the cows had broken out the night before, but after hours of searching he had been unable to find them.
With the assistance of some friends and Thornley, Wartak was able to get the cattle returned safely home. He will now be looking for how they escaped and will be repairing the fence.
Belted Galloway are a heritage breed of cattle which originated in Scotland. They are often referred to as Oreo cows or Pandas because of their colouring. Cows of the breed typically range between 1,000 and 1,500 pounds. They are primarily raised for beef.
