PICTOU – The Town of Pictou will be a little brighter after Friday.

The Pictou Christmas Light Up will be held at 6 p.m. and will include a tree lighting at Market Square as well as live nativity, music and choirs and hot drinks.

There is also expected to be a visit from Santa as well a story reading by Mrs. Claus.

Pictou Recreation is trying something a bit different this year by hosting a parade on Water Street beginning at 5:45 p.m. that will end at Market Square. 

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., a Fill the Truck Food Drive will take place in front of Sobeys, Pictou location, in support of the Pictou West Food Bank.

Meanwhile, the Northumberland Fisheries Museum on Caladh Avenue is kicking off its own fundraising event Friday at 6:30 p.m. with its Community Christmas Tree Challenge.

It is expected that as many as a dozen community groups will decorate Christmas trees in a theme of their choice. The trees can be viewed from 6:30 to 9 p.m. nightly at museum from this Friday to Dec. 9.  

Visitors can vote for their favourite tree by using coins. There will also be paper ornaments available as well as wreaths with space on them for people to write the name of a late captain or helper. Ship wheels will also be available for people to write the names of former boats.

The winner of the challenge will be announced Sunday evening.

Hot chocolate and cider will be available all week and the museum will be selling tickets on a scallop draw selling for $2 each or $5 for three tickets.   There will be three draws for five pounds each. The draw will take place Dec. 15.

Other events in the Town of Pictou for the holiday season include:

Gift Card Bingo, Sunday, Dec. 3, 2 p.m. at the Pictou Legion; $5 for a 3 up book and $10 for a six up book; 50/50 draws and door prizes. More than 1,600 gift cards will be given away. Eleven games will be worth $100 each.  Jackpot is worth $500. Pot of Gold cash game. Proceeds go to the Lobster Carnival fundraiser. 

Breakfast with Santa, Saturday, Dec. 16, 9-11 a.m. at The Palace Theatre, Water Street. Tickets are to be purchased in advance from Stone Soup
Café, 485-4949, as all children get a gift from Santa.
Santa visit in Pictou through town, Saturday, Dec. 16. Bring your children to Market Square to meet Santa – treat bag for all! Hosted by the Pictou Fire Department.

Santa visit and puppets, Saturday, Dec. 16, 11 a.m., Pictou Library. Plus Santa's workshop 1-4:30 p.m. Crafts and fun stuff for Christmas.
New Years Eve family skate and fireworks, Sunday, Dec. 31, 6-8 p.m. Hector Arena, a Pictou Lobster Carnival fundraiser. Admission: $5 / $15 family.
