NEW GLASGOW

The Town of New Glasgow marked the official beginning of Kin week, with a proclamation celebrating the many ways both the Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs of New Glasgow serve the communities of Pictou County.

On Feb. 20, Brian McIntosh and Mary Macleod – representing the New Glasgow Kinsmen and Kinettes, respectively – looked on as Nancy Mayor Dicks signed a proclamation declaring Feb. 20th Kin Day, and the 98th Anniversary of Kin Canada. The declaration also marked the week of Feb. 18-24 as Kinsmen and Kinettes Week.

Both McIntosh and Macleod spoke of how proud they were to have their service clubs acknowledged for all the local work they do in Pictou County. Both noted that they were grateful to have leadership roles in organizations that help serve the needs of local communities.
“It’s great to get the message out that we are in the community and we’re active,” said McIntosh. “This formalizes what we do throughout the year,” McIntosh said, adding that the Kinsmen organize and host events like a summer baseball program, a power skating program, breakfast programs, programs at Christmastime to help families in need with the Kinettes and various bingos throughout the year.

Macleod noted the Kinettes also host events like bingos, fundraisers, breakfast programs and scholarships – like the one associated with the Great Trivia Challenge.

Kinsmen and Kinettes Week also coincides with a celebration of the Week of Kindness, in which both clubs carry out random acts of kindness around the community. On Feb. 24, Canada’s National Day of KINdness will hour Kin organizations across the country.

For KINdness day, the Kinettes will be at the Highland Square Mall, handing out chocolate kisses from 12 to 2 p.m. In addition to KINdness day, the Kinettes will also be partnering with Maurice’s Clothing store to help the Pictou County Food Bank. From Feb. 19-24, Maurice’s will offer customers a 20 per cent discount on their purchases, if they donate to the food bank.
