The province, which currently owns the building, has confirmed that it received an offer from the Town of Pictou to purchase it, but nothing has been decided yet.

Destination Northumberland and Eastern Shores has been operating its VIC in the building for the past two seasons after the province decided it would no longer house a tourist centre there.

A Department of Transportation and Infrastructure media spokesman said the province is considering the offer from the town, but with tourist season quickly approaching it is prepared to “extend that offer to the town and DEANS to meet their needs during the tourism season as the department works through the process.”

Cindy MacKinnon, manager of DEANS, said her group in partnership with the town plans to pursue this further with the province to see what can be done to get the VIC open again this summer.

“We will need to check with Transportation and see what its thoughts are because we need to know next month what we are going to do about staff,” she said.
