NEW GLASGOW - Twenty-five teams are getting ready to relay.
The Pictou County Relay for Life will start at 6 p.m. at Glasgow Square Saturday with a parade through the streets of New Glasgow, said relay co-chair Janine Linthorne.
She said the cancer survivor’s reception will begin at 5 p.m. but an hour later survivors and teams will parade through downtown New Glasgow at 6 p.m. Linthorne said the parade was something they did a few years ago and one of the teams asked if it could be brought back again so the relay was happy to oblige.
“It will be led by the Heatherbells Pipe Band and survivors and teams will do the walk, but spectators can join in,” she said. “The community can cheer people on.”
The theme of this year’s relay is, Around the World, so teams are encouraged to dress up and celebrate the cultures they identify with or have an interest in.
At 9 p.m., the luminaries will be lit around the track. They will be on sale up until the actually lighting. There will also be live entertainment that includes East River Rats, Niki Veniot, Inner Voice, High Diving Act, John Raven and Dinasour Neil. There will be face painting on the site as well as food vendors. Riverside Parkway from MacLean Street to Dalhousie Street will be closed during the event as well as the Glasgow Square parking lot.
“We are encouraging the community to come out and enjoy the evening,” she said. “It is a big community event.”
