The Schizophrenia Society’s Road to Recovery Walk will be held today in New Glasgow’s Carmichael Park.
The annual walk is used to raise awareness about issues surrounding mental health as well as to raise money which will go to support mental health initiatives. This year’s event will fundraise for the Bright Smiles campaign. Bright Smiles helps cover the cost of dental work needed for those with mental illness.
Cecilia McRae is helping to organize the event and said they typically have between 40 and 50 people take part. While there are still many people who don’t want to come out because of the stigma associated with mental illness, she said that is thankfully becoming less of a problem.
“It’s just about awareness and trying to reduce that stigma that’s associated with it,” she said.
She said the community has traditionally shown great support for the event.
Registration will be held at 11 a.m. at Carmichael Park which is on George Street in New Glasgow. The walk will go from there to the Westside Sobeys where there will be a barbecue.
The barbecue is free for all to take part.
