NEW GLASGOW

Jeanne Coppillie has been a volunteer at the Pictou County East Food Bank in New Glasgow for about 14 years, spending hours handling food products for those who might otherwise go hungry. But she wanted to do more.

That’s when she got the idea of holding a jewelry and scarf sale in support of the food bank.

“I had a lot of jewelry that I wasn’t wearing and I talked to my friends and they had a lot of jewelry they weren’t wearing,” she said.

Another person mentioned how she had a lot of scarves she never wore.

It only made sense to her that their unused items could be sold to benefit those in need of food.

In the past they had considered yard sale kinds of fundraisers, she said, but that can take up a considerable amount of storage space, which wasn’t available.

“We can’t store anything. It has to be brought in the day of the sale. The scarves and jewelry only takes up one room in the house,” she said with a laugh.

There has been no shortage of donations for the cause and she said there will be plenty of scarves and jewelry to choose from at the sale which will be taking place both Friday and Saturday at the food bank, located at 410 Granville St. in New Glasgow.

On Friday the sale will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday it will run from 9 a.m. to noon.

All the money will go directly to the food bank.

“It’s a massive operation,” said Coppillie who described how 60-70 volunteers give their time three days a week. There are no paid staff at the food bank.

“I think we’re feeding about almost 10 per cent of the population,” she said.
