Many outdoor enthusiasts took advantage of the mild temperatures, sunshine and day off work to hit the trails on the public grounds, taking off on skis, sleds, snowshoe and by foot.

“Every day is a snow day for me, but it’s nice to be able to go out with friends when they have it off,” said Bev Fletcher, who is retired and was out snowshoeing with friends Shelly McCarron and Leslie Kitson while they had the day off work.

It was the first time the trio from Pictou County were able to snowshoe together and they had only positive things to say about the weather and the experience, noting that two of them were borrowing gear from the park.

Parks and recreation co-ordinator Martin Bates said it was the busiest day they’ve had so far this season for people borrowing equipment, a feature the park started offering last year for free, thanks to Active Pictou County.

The purchase was funded by the provincial government and allowed them to gather up 12 pairs of adult snowshoes and 46 pairs of kids’ sizes. They’re looking to expand their inventory if they can find funding, Bates said, noting that adult pairs were quickly booked during the weekends last season.

They’re available to borrow Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., and can be signed out for use over the weekend ahead of time.

The service is open to anyone and isn’t restricted to the park.

While Fletcher, McCarron and Kitson will readily admit that they’re not the biggest fans of winter, having the opportunity to get outside on a clear, mild day helps makes the season more bearable.

“It was so beautiful out, you can’t miss the opportunity because you don’t get many,” Kitson said.

“Winter’s nice if you dress for it and enjoy the outdoors,” added McCarron.

Snowshoes can be booked through Trenton Park by calling 902-752-1019 or by visiting their office at the park.
