Paul Corbin, recreation director for the town, said they have some special events planned in honour of the town’s 125th anniversary.
One of the biggest new items they hope to be a draw is a new dance that will be held pon Friday night targeting those who have a taste for songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s.by the Good Feelin’ Band. It will start at 8 p.m.
“The other big highlight is we have fireworks this year,” said Corbin.
Those will be held at the soccer fields on Sunday night. The Third Step will entertain the crowd as they wait for the fireworks which will begin at dusk.
Corbin said the show will be done by Fireworks FX. It will feature some never before seen fireworks, so they’re encouraging as many people as possible to check it out. Those that can, he encourages to walk since parking will be limited at the soccer complex.
Other events throughout the week will include everything from the kids fun day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday to the car show on Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and the Mayor and council Garden Party at Allan Park starting at 1:30 p.m. featuring music by Jim Richard and Doris Mason.
The Park Concert on Wednesday at 7 p.m. will feature Stellarton native Frank MacKay.
“We booked him pretty early on,” Corbin said. “He’s got some great music.”
As a bonus MacKay also throws in some great stories, he said.
So far the weather looks like it will cooperate with the exception of Thursday. Corbin said people can keep up to date on any cancellations on the town’s Facebook page or their website.
“The golf tournament we’ll just soldier through,” he said.
Overall Homecoming is a great event for the town. Businesses usually see a pick up in traffic and sales.
With no other town festivals this weekend, Corbin hopes residents throughout Pictou County will take the time to come out and enjoy some of the festivities.
“We want it to be a fun laid back festival that every one can enjoy,” Corbin said.
