ALMA – A Northumberland Regional High School student is leading the charge towards fighting Lou Gehrig’s disease in Pictou County.

An organizational meeting was recently held for the first annual Walk for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) after Sara Watters, a student at NRHS, felt there was a need for the walk in the county.

Walks have been held in other areas of the province, she said, but none have been organized in this area.

Along with a group of family and friends, Watters will be holding the first walk on June 2 at Victoria Park in Westville. Registration for the walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Westville Civic Centre with the walk kickoff scheduled for 10:30 a.m.

The walk is more than just a fundraising event, however.

“It is a celebration of hope for those living with ALS as well as a celebration of lives lived for families and friends of those who have lost their lives to ALS,” said Watters.

ALS is a rapidly progressive and fatal neuromuscular disease. There is no known cause for ALS and no known cure.

Anyone wishing further information or pledge forms can contact Watters at [email protected]. Pledge forms can also be downloaded at http://www.walkforals.ca/provincial-walks/als-society-of-nova-scotia

Sixty per cent of the funds raised by the walk will be used in Nova Scotia for client service programs with 40 per cent being directed to research with ALS Canada.

Watters is hoping the community will come out and support the cause and help range awareness and funds.
