Throughout rural Pictou County, there are a number of community run Summer Recreation Programs.

Each program provides an opportunity for children in their community to get out during the summer months, encouraging youth to develop healthier active and social lifestyles through positive interpersonal interactions with peers and leader role-models. Provided below is a list of Summer Recreation Programs going on in Pictou County along with their contact information:

Lismore: Don Butler, 902-926-2589, [email protected]

Plymouth: Janet MacDonald, 902-752-1018, [email protected]

River John: Joanne Wilkins, 902-351-2143, [email protected]

Thorburn: Randy Palmer, 902-922-2277, [email protected]

The Municipality of Pictou County offers the Leisure and Active Recreation for Kids (LARK) Program. The LARK program offers children the opportunity to get out into the community and become active during the summer months. LARK is available to areas that do not hire summer staff and offers low organized games, arts and crafts and sports to children.

Pictou County Recreation in partnership with Pictou County YMCA will be offering Red Cross Swimming Lessons to youth located in the communities of Lismore, River John, and surrounding areas. Lessons will take place at McDonalds Cove Beach from July 23-Aug. 3 and Lismore Beach from Aug. 6-17 and will run daily Monday to Friday over a two-week period in each community.
