The Hockey Monologues set for stage in Pictou County

When her son finishes his career on the ice, Colleen Hawley can imagine “making a menace of herself” to others who still have kids playing hockey.

Her hilarious take on “learning to cope when all of your kids are finished hockey,” is one of the skits that’s part of “It’s Not Just a Game” – The Hockey Monologues, which will be staged next week in support of the Weeks Major Midgets. Hawley’s son Mason is playing in his second year with the hockey team.

The Hockey Monologues is a comical look at a lot of different subjects related to hockey, ranging from “selling 50/50 tickets, to the stress of the draft, to dealing with the smell of hockey gear.”

A cast of 17 actors aged 11 to late 50s will bring The Hockey Monologues to life in 16 skits. Hawley wrote the script and directs the production, staged by Curtain Call Players.

The registered nurse endeavours to find laughter in situations she finds herself in. “I think my personality – I tend to try to find humour in everything because life can be stressful.”

Because hockey can be nerve-wracking and emotional at times, she said finding a way to laugh at it is “a good coping mechanism in the rink when you’re surrounded by people yelling or when we’re losing really badly,” she said with a chuckle.

The characters in The Hockey Monologues aren’t based on any one particular person, but on “situations hockey parents tend to encounter on a regular basis. There are always people in the rink who are overbearing, or who lose their cool,” she said.

“They’re different things I’ve witnessed over the years or been a part of … just from being around rinks for 20 years with all of my boys,” she said, adding that she did plenty of research when writing the skits, and also got ideas from other hockey parents and players.

Made up of all local people – including doctors, teachers, nurses – who act together for fun, Curtain Call Players has staged productions in the past as fundraisers for the Aberdeen Hospital Auxiliary and Early Intervention.

Involved with the group for about 15 years, she’s performed in Curtain Call Players’ productions of Steel Magnolias, Stephen King’s Misery, two productions of Momologues, and The Perfect Wedding.

Hawley notes that some of the actors have never been on stage before, and she’s excited to have new people involved.
