Heather and Albert Wilkinson live on Albion Street in New Glasgow with their five children. The tree fell from a neighbouring property and crashed over their house with one branch piercing their roof and coming into a bedroom where their daughters sleep.

The pair said they are thankful no one was hurt. Their neighbour’s insurance will be covering the cost of the repairs, which Albert believes will be quite extensive from the look of things.

Albert said he half expected something like this to happen – although he didn’t expect it quite so soon. He said he had actually been talking with another man in the yard just shortly before the tree blew down about a branch that had hit his car. He pointed to the large trees behind his home and said: “These trees need to go. They’re going to fall one day.”

His friend assured him he was worrying for nothing.

It wasn’t long after that the family was in the house when sure enough, what he predicted happened.

Both Heather and Albert said it felt like an earthquake when the tree landed.

The New Glasgow Fire Department responded and took care of removing the branch that went into the home. They also put a tarp on to keep the rain out. That was about all they could do though, Albert said, because they couldn’t remove any more of the tree without risking more damage to the home.

He said he believes a crane may be needed to lift if off the home.

Standing in her kitchen with tree branches in front of every window, Heather says. “It looks like we live in the woods.

As scary was it was she said she’s thankful all their children were safe.

“Just thank the Lord, our three girls weren’t asleep in the back bedroom,” Heather said.

“If it had of been two hours later, they all would have been in bed or getting ready for school.”
