NEW GLASGOW – The Wind in Our Sails, the annual spring concert by the Trinitarians and the Voicetime Studio Singers, both under the direction of Monica George Punke will take place 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 10 at Trinity United Church, New Glasgow.

The concert will open with the Voicetime Studio Singers version of John Ireland’s setting of John Masefield’s poem Sea Fever. During the concert, they will offer several selections before joining forces with the Trinitarians to sing Nova Scotia composer, Donna Rhodenizer’s piece, Come Home.

The Trinitarians, singing both as a full choir and as a smaller ensemble of just women or the men will sing a wide range of pieces including several spirituals, Allister MacGillivary’s Song of Peace, a new setting of Tennyson’s poem, There is Sweet Music, songs by Elton John, Joni Mitchel, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and much more.

In addition to the many and varied choral contributions to this concert, there will be several guests. There will be a solo by Leah McPherson, the winner of this year’s NGMF’s Junior Cup. Also featured will be two former voice students of Punke, Nicole Ross, soprano, now studying voice at McGill University, Montreal, and Luke MacIsaac, baritone, studying voice at Memorial University of Newfoundland. The three soloists will sing a range of Italian arias and, together, Ross and MacIsaac with sing the Papageno Papagena duet from Mozart’s opera, The Magic Flute.

Haley MacLeod, violin, will be accompanying the choirs in two pieces: the traditional Scottish song, Ca’ the Yowes; and, a new setting of the Celtic Blessing by Gail Poulsen, and arranged by Harris Loewen. In addition, MacLeod will play a set of traditional Scottish tunes, a slip jig, strathspey and two reels.

“As usual, we put together a program of really interesting music for a wide variety of tastes and suitable for the whole family,” Punke said. “First, and foremost, we choose music that we love to sing. And, I think we communicate that very strongly to our audience.”
