It’s not exactly the way a person wants to start the day. But as they watched firefighters battle the flames at their rural home outside Scotsburn, Jason Bezanson and his mother were thankful to escape safely.

The Minto Road home caught fire early Tuesday morning.

Bezanson woke up around 7 a.m. and heard a snapping noise, he says. He quickly realized the flue was on fire and that it was spreading.

He woke his mother and got her and their dog out of the home. Neither of them were injured.

Bezanson said that the house his grandfather lived in on the same site had also burned years ago.

“It was a two-storey house then,” he said.

He said they use wood exclusively to heat the home and is quite sure the fire started in the chimney.

Scotsburn fire chief Allan Fraser said there was heavy smoke coming from the roof when they arrived at the scene. While it was hard to say the full extent of the damage at the time, he said it was most likely a write-off.

Caribou, West River and River John Fire departments also responded under the new automatic aid system that the fire departments have in place.

Despite the efforts of the fire departments the small bungalow was gutted.

Bezanson and his mother will be staying with a nearby relative for now.

Disaster volunteers with the Canadian Red Cross helped with emergency purchases like clothing, food and other basics.
