Caribou Fire Department responded to the call around 9 a.m. and when firefighters arrived the mobile home was engulfed in smoke.
Deputy Fire Chief Frank MacFarlane said the homeowner was alerted to the fire in the basement by her cat and when she went to check on the animal, she noticed the home’s wiring was on fire.
The woman and her cat escaped the fire safely, but the home was destroyed, he said. Caribou fire fighters received assistance from Pictou, Scotsburn and Abercombie and remained at the scene for about three hours.
Disaster volunteers with the Canadian Red Cross are assisting the woman and her five-year-old son with temporary lodging, food, clothing purchases and other emergency needs.
