PICTOU

People wanting to learn more about the historic Town of Pictou will need to get their walking shoes on.

McCulloch House Museum and Genealogy Centre is hosting walking tours three times a day from Thursday to Sunday about historic architecture in Pictou. The tours will be led by women dressed in 1815 period costumes designed and manufactured by Sherbrooke Village.

Michelle Davey, curator and site manager for McCulloch House Museum and Genealogy Centre, said this time period was chosen because it was the year Pictou Academy was established, but ironically women could not attend the school until 1842.

She said people can register for the walking tours at either Seaside Market on the Waterfront or by contacting McCulloch House Museum and Genealogy Centre directly. Each tour costs $10 a person.

The tours will begin June 16 from the waterfront and cover properties on the waterfront as well as Water Street, Church Street and end at the McCulloch House.

Davey said the tours will focus on the town’s Scottish architecture of the homes and buildings as well as the people who lived and worked in them. The tours are expected to last between 60 and 90 minutes and people with pets, children and strollers are welcome to participate.

In addition to the walking tours, McCulloch House Museum and Genealogy Centre will be hosting a new exhibit, From Vimy to Juno, until mid-September. It will focus on people who served in both world wars and includes guest lectures.

Staff of McCulloch House are also hosting a tour of the Truro Library on June 20. Participants will meet the local genealogy centre and travel to the library which is now housed in a historic building.
