Weekend passes on sale for Pictou Lobster Carnival

Purchasing a weekend pass to the Pictou Lobster Carnival is still a deal waiting to happen until the end of Saturday.

The Pictou Lobster Carnival will take place July 6-8 with activities both on the land and sea including musical acts, lobster boat races, children’s parade and princess pageant.

Weekend passes will be on sale for buy one get the second half price until June 30. The passes are $20 each and can be purchased at various locations in Pictou including Sears, Woody’s Variety, Millside General Store, Lyons Brook Rite Shop as well as Big Al’s Convenience in New Glasgow.

“It is coming along,” said Lobster Carnival Chair Shawn McNamara. “We had a meeting last night and everything is falling into place, which is super. We have a lot of entertainment and a lot of different events we are trying this year.”

The opening ceremonies will take place Friday with the annual lobster banding and king lobster contest. The evening will end at 10 p.m. with fireworks over Pictou Harbour.

Saturday is full day of events with a children’s parade, derby races, Black Battalion parade and service, modified boat races and downtown jam session. The Little Mermaid and Prince Neptune pageant will take place on the main stage followed by bed races. The afternoon will feature the Gary Ward air display, lobster boat races, trap hauling contest and the Mardi Gras street parade.

On Sunday, the day starts with the antique car show on Caladh Avenue followed by a treasure hunt and dog show at the Pictou vet clinic. Sunday’s entertainment headliner is Cape Breton fiddler Ashley MacIsaac.

Hinchey’s Amusements and lobster dinners will be available throughout the weekend.

The carnival is in need of volunteers for the Friday and Saturday evening shifts at the main gate from 10 p.m. until midnight. Anyone interested is asked the contact the Pictou Lobster Carnival office.
