PICTOU – The Town of Pictou is giving its policing services a closer look.

Pictou Mayor Jim Ryan said during Monday’s council meeting that he wants staff to begin looking at policing needs and costs within the town since it is one of its largest expenditures.

“Its important to look at the services we are receiving,” he said. “The review is us taking responsibility of our tax dollars and not a condemnation of our policing.”

Ryan said the town currently has a policing contract with the RCMP until 2032, but changes can be made if enough time is given. He said Pictou is currently being served by a municipal contract, but there are other contract options available if this one is not suiting all the town’s needs.

Eventually, the mayor said he would like all town services to be looked at by staff to make sure it is getting the right services at the right costs.

“It is just a starting point and we will start with the RCMP to see whether it is the best contract for the town,” he said.
