PICTOU – County council isn’t giving up on the need for sidewalks under an overpass near the Pictou County Wellness Centre.
Council recently wrote a letter to the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal for an update on getting a sidewalk in place in this area, but its response was that there are no current plans for the work.
County staff said a sidewalk-improvement plan was done in the past and that for sidewalks from the Wellness Centre going to Highland Square Mall, there would need to be infrastructure changes with an existing highway ramp.
Staff said the province doesn’t plan to make any changes so if the municipality wants it done, it will need to fund the work itself.
Councillors agreed it is a high traffic area and the safety of pedestrians is a concern.
“We are going to have to continue to lobby the province and push along with other municipalities to make it happen,” Warden Robert Parker said. “It is too big of a project for municipal infrastructure.”
Council agreed to send a letter to the provincial minister of transportation as well as local MLAs in hopes of getting some new support.
