PICTOU – Pictou town staff will be asked to paint a clear picture in regard to accessibility of town-owned buildings and facilities such as trails and parks.

Pictou Mayor Jim Ryan said Monday that the town recently received word that it was not successful in obtaining three federal government grants this year. The money would have been used to install automatic doors in the town hall, RCMP detachment and Fisheries Training Pool.

He said the only reason given in the government’s rejection letter to the town was that there were many applications that had to be considered.

Ryan said in the future he wants to be better prepared by having solid understanding of the town’s needs in terms of accessibility so that when funding opportunities come up, it is ready to apply with a large amount of information collected from its internal audit.

“When we have new projects on the go we need to look at accessibility,” he said, adding that accessibility can involve everything from commercial development to snow clearing.

Coun. Dan Currie supported the accessibility audit saying he would like to see outside groups such as seniors groups and Let Abilities Work involved as well
