Although already in use, Stellarton’s new dog park is awaiting its finishing touch – a sign.

“We’re waiting for the sign – it basically identifies it as a dog park, and has rules on it,” said Paul Corbin, recreation director with the Town of Stellarton. “It has to go up before we officially open.”

The process of creating a new dog park in Stellarton has been ongoing over the past four years. Previously, the town had trial parks set up in ball fields that were not in use, as winter dog parks.
The town contributed $10,000 in the for the creation of a new dog park – an 80-by-70-foot park featuring a soft surface, a leashing area, and four-foot high fence to enclose the area near the upper field at the Sobey Soccer Complex.

“People are using it right now, but we’re still waiting for the sign to be finished. We’ll hopefully have it up this week,” said Corbin.
The original idea was for a dog park to be built in the Valley Woods Park, but after a survey was conducted, feedback showed that some residents in the area were opposed to the idea.

Council requested that Corbin look for good potential locations, and eventually it was determined the old lob ball field was the best site for a dog park.
“It’s great to see we have a dedicated off-leash dog park – it’s something we can grow in the future, to meet the needs of all the dog owners in Stellarton, and the surrounding areas,” said Corbin.
Corbin said the new park in Stellarton meets a critical need for an off-leash dog park, noting that the one in New Glasgow, at the Tartan Field, was eventually shut down.
