Trenton Fire Department participated in a training exercise at Nova Scotia Power's generating station Tuesday afternon.

A spokeswoman for Nova Scotia Power said the company identified a small amount of coal smouldering in one of the plant’s on-site storage containers Tuesday morning and it activated its emergency response protocols which included contacting the local fire station.

The company said the smouldering was brought under control and it did not affected regular operations at the plant. Smouldering coal happens from time to time given its chemical properties. Nova Scotia Power does have equipment and training required to manage these situations, but it took the opportunity to use a real situation that is under control as a training exercise with its own personnel and fire responders.   As per standard practice, responders are using firefighting foam to control and extinguish the smouldering.
