The old marine forge at the former TrentonWorks site is being demolished, a project that began about two weeks ago and is expected to last another month. The old stacks will also be torn down in the coming weeks.
The work is being done by Pictou County’s Marinus Verhagen Enterprises.
“It’s sad to see part of our history being taken down,” said Mayor Shannon MacInnis. “But if it means creating new space for other businesses to take its place, well, hopefully that’s what is going to happen.”
The property and assets went into receivership under PricewaterhouseCoopers, which is overseeing the demolition. However, Nova Scotia Lands, a Crown corporation, has taken over the property and is trying to locate businesses that might be interested in setting up shop at the site, which has a history of iron and steel industries dating back almost 150 years.
