A pre-school project for Earth Day was demolished last week.

Earlier this year, children at Creative Beginnings in Stellarton made bird feeders and placed them along the Samson Trail in honour of Earth Day. Last week, those feeders were intentionally destroyed by one or more people.

Carrie Anderson-Larade, who owns Creative Beginnings said last week one of their staff was going along the trail when she noticed the damaged bird feeders.

She and her niece, Ava, went out to pick them up. As they walked, Ava, pointed out who made which.

“It was very frustrating,” Anderson-Larade said.

She said the kids were all devastated to find out what happened.

“They took so much pride in them,” she said, adding that they often walked along the trail to watch the birds feeding.

“We try to teach kids to respect others, the environment and themselves,” she said. “That there is just disrespect.”

While the daycare didn’t report the incident to police feeling that it would go nowhere, Anderson-Larade hopes that whoever did the crime will see the picture of the sad look on Ava’s face and feel some sort of guilt.

“They might have meant nothing (to the people who destroyed them), but to that kids it’s everything. Hopefully they see it and can feel a little remorse.”

The kids will be making new bird feeders to replace the ones that were damaged. Anderson-Larade hopes that this time people will show a little more respect for the work the children put into them.
