Melford Dand MacLean, 88, of Kings Head, Little Harbour. It is with profound sadness, the family of Mel MacLean announce his peaceful passing at Maritime Oddfellows Home in Pictou, Thursday, Aug. 2, 2018. Born in Eureka, he was a son of the late James Hugh and Bessie Butler (Prime) MacLean. He will be truly missed as a brother, father, uncle, grandfather and great grandfather as well as a true friend by many. As one of the truly respected business owners in Pictou County from the age of 18-58, Dad was known by and became friends with many people. He retired at the age of 58 and was never one to slow down. He entered politics as a way to give back to his community and served as County Councilor and Deputy Warden for years. Dad was also involved in Pictou County Crime Stoppers as one of its founding members, PC Rivers Association, Little Harbour Community Center (past President), Little Harbour Fire Dept., as Deputy Fire Chief. He was predeceased by his parents, sister Beth, brother Earl, sister Faith and wife Joy. Surviving are son, Mel (Pam Brett) MacLean, Edmonton, AB; daughters: Beth (Doug) Carmichael, Sydney, Australia; Sherri (Mike Fauvelle), Kings Head; Pam (David Purdy), Kings Head; grandchildren: Caleb MacLean, Chloe MacLean (Johnny Reddick), Kirsten and Cory Westaway (Kate Ranni), Jason and Jean Marc Fauvelle (Marissa Martin); great granddaughter, Ariella Reddick, great grandson, Sawyer Westaway; sister, Helen Christie. Mel is also survived by many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the entire staff of Maritime Oddfellows Home and Dr. Randy Burrill for their extraordinary care and compassion shown to our father and family. You have truly made the last 4 years easier to bear for all of us. Visitation 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held from Little Harbour Presbyterian Church, Monday, Aug. 6 at 11 a.m., with Rev Lorne MacLeod officiating. Interment will be at Little Harbour Church Cemetery.
