It is economically smart and socially just to have a carbon pricing scheme that returns revenues back to lower-income households. The international non-partisan Citizens Climate Lobby has been pushing for that type of carbon pricing for over ten years now.
The sole purpose of carbon pricing is to move our world towards total decarbonization, the one and only way for humankind to save itself from dire outcomes. To not make this transition would be pure folly as many studies, including the 2016 Citigroup, tell us paying for disasters ad infinitum will cost us much more. But we have to take the ouch factor out of transitioning to clean energy, hence the monies collected in pricing the emissions are returned to households. Those households continue returning the money into the economy. The economy keeps purring while, year after year, we reduce our emissions.
Money back of course is very welcomed but the greatest reward is in humanity giving itself a livable world.
