Our cottage sits on a hill overlooking Moodie Cove and the spot where Northern Pulp proposes to discharge 70-90 million litres of treated effluent daily into the Northumberland Strait.
Our family has had cottages on Moodie Cove since the early 1900s, before the mill compromised air quality and before its effluent hugged the shoreline along Lighthouse Beach. Our deep appreciation for the Northumberland Strait’s beauty and warm water is what keeps us coming back.
Like hundreds of summer cottagers along the Strait, we spend our money at local restaurants, stores, festivals, farmers markets, and with local trades people. Like other cottagers, we had planned to convert our summer home into our full-time residence. As the mill’s stench increasingly looms in the air and threats of a pipe continue, our plans to make Pictou County our full-time home are on hold.
Pictou County says it wants to grow, but air and water pollution from Northern Pulp make it hard to compete with other rural Nova Scotia communities who have forward thinking sustainable values.
We’ll be at the No Pipe Land and Sea Rally on July 6 because we believe the Northumberland Strait and Pictou County deserve better.
