NEW GLASGOW – Gingerbread houses have taken a prominent place at the Pictou County United Way this week.

Following a weekend activity making gingerbread houses, the United Way now has displays set up with elaborate gingerbread creations crafted by some of Pictou County’s culinary experts. Their displays are part of a fundraising silent auction that the United Way is holding in hopes of bringing in some extra money – and perhaps just as importantly to spread some holiday cheer.

Participating chefs include: chef Robert Vinton, The Bistro; chef Thomas Carey, Pictou Lodge; chef Gilles Godin and the NSCC Pictou Campus cooking class; and chef Ryan Skelton of Sobeys.

The NSCC cooking class has designed a replica of their school complete with the street in front and traffic on it. Carey has created a replica of Pictou Lodge, while Vinton and Skelton have equally meticulous designs.

Jessica Smith, executive director of the United Way, said she got the idea from a similar fundraiser she helped with in the past in Halifax.

People in the community are invited to view the displays and bid on their favourite creations.

“We’re hoping people will bid on the pieces so that they can use them in their homes as the ultimate centrepiece, as a holiday display at their business, or as special and unique holiday present,” says Smith.

The successful winners of the auction will be notified on Dec. 13 and the United Way staff will be delivering the pieces.

This is the first time they’ve had the chance to do something of this kind in Pictou County, but she hopes they can build on it next year with perhaps more participants creating the ginger displays.

In addition to the houses that are being bid on, they are also selling some kits they have left over from the weekend for $10.
