Crushers forward amongst Tourette Syndrome Foundation 2013 Hero candidates

NEW GLASGOW – Garrett Holmes felt honoured when he received an email saying that he had been nominated for the Tourette Syndrome Foundation of Canada Hero for 2013.

A forward with the Weeks Jr. A Crushers, Holmes has been mocked during games because of his Tourette’s, but that hasn’t kept him from continuing to excel in hockey and become a role model within Pictou County.

“I thought it was amazing and never expected to be thought of in that regard (as a hero),” he said. “I got the email and went onto the website and read some of the stories and I was near tears reading some of the stories. For somebody to think of me in that regard is extremely heartwarming and an amazing feeling.”

He is amongst 11 other Canadians right now being voted for as the TS Hero of 2013, but has no idea who nominated him. Holmes said that if he ever finds out he’d like to thank them for thinking of him in this way. Currently he is third in the voting process, but he said he could care less about where he finishes.

“The votes don’t matter at all (to me),” he said. “Just that somebody would think of me in that regard – I’ve already won in my opinion.”

Since speaking about an on-ice incident in September and saying publically that he has Tourette’s, he said he’s started to feel more comfortable as a player and person.

“It’s been huge because I wouldn’t tell people I had it before and now I’m not scared of it at all,” said Holmes. “Everyone knows and I’m glad they know because there is nothing to hide and I can do what I like to do.”

Voting for the TS Hero of 2013 runs until 1 p.m. on Dec. 15. To vote, like the photo of Holmes on the Tourette Syndrome Foundation of Canada Facebook page.
