HALIFAX – Opposition leaders are calling defeated Pictou West Liberal candidate Glennie Langille’s appointment to chief protocol officer patronage.

AMANDA JESS - THE NEWS

Langille, a former communications director for the Liberal Party, finished third in her riding in the October election.

Langille said when reached by phone Tuesday afternoon, she would return the call. However, the protocol office called back and said she wouldn’t be doing any interviews.

Premier Stephen McNeil defended the choice and said Langille is very qualified for the position.

The premier’s office said Langille’s appointment takes effect in mid-January.

Langille is on a year-to-year contract that pays around $85,000 a year.

A Nova Scotia MLA’s salary is approximately $89,000 a year, according to the September 2013 Members’ Manual from the House of Assembly.

She will be in charge of an office that co-ordinates official ceremonies and visits from members of the royal family, heads of state and government, and others. It also manages the Order of Nova Scotia as well as provides consulting services to government departments, non-government organizations and the public.

Why not tell it like it really is for once. She was appointed by the Liberals to be their knife fork and spoon placement officer. She will be in that position for at least the four years or so that the Liberals have in their mandate. By my calculation that is $85x4=$340 grand plus at least half of the amount in expenses so I guess that half a million bucks will be spent on frivolous fluff over the next while. Big question though what if no one visits, I mean what if the Queen or her family decide that we have seen enough of Nova Scotia. Does that mean she will have to pay it all back? I suppose the invites are going out as we speak, there has gotta be someone out there somewhere who wants to visit at our expense of course, always at our expense.

You would think that an $85000 a year position would necessitate some kind of hiring process. I am so pleased that my tax dollars are paying this salary for an unadvertised job. Cripes! Well done Glennie...I am so jealous.

Strike 1 Cabinet control of fund without independent oversight Strike 2 Muskrat Falls...... Not in best interest of Province to proceed Strike 3 Patronage appointment. If someone is qualified to do the job let them apply in a fair and open process The feeling of optimism that most people felt with a change in government has now officially ended.
