The local animal shelter has about 40 hamsters up for adoption that it took in after Pictou County Pets in the Highland Square Mall recently closed its doors.
“Pictou County Pets took the hamsters in because it was closing and I guess the SPCA did Pictou County Pets a favour because they adopted out 26 cats for the SPCA,” said Lynn Stewart, an employee with the SPCA.
She said the SPCA is selling the hamsters for $5 with some bedding and food. Some cages can also be purchased from the SPCA that range from $15 to $20. Stewart said there is a large variety of hamsters available in many different colours as well as short hair and long hair.
“We can also guarantee that none of them are pregnant,” she said which is important considering hamsters can give birth to large litters at a rapid rate. She said they have both male and female hamsters ready for adoption but all are in separate cages.
Stewart said while the SPCA doesn’t encourage people to get new pets at Christmas, if a pet is on a child’s wish list, a hamster is pretty low maintenance. It requires food and water once a day and its bedding needs to be changed once a week.
“You could leave a hamster alone for a weekend with some food and water, but you can’t do that with a dog,” she said.
If there are other pets in a home, such as cats, the hamster should be in a room with a closed door since the other animal’s hunter instincts might kick in.
Stewart also stressed that hamsters are currently being housed in the SPCA’s adoption room and are not taking up space in the shelter from another animals. It currently has a few dogs and many cats ready for adoption as well.
The Pictou County SPCA is open Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Wednesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is also open Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m.
