Gryphons varsity girls lose tournament final to Vikettes

NEW GLASGOW – Down 32-20 at halftime, the Amherst Vikettes outscored North Nova 22-8 in the third quarter en route to their 55-51 victory, winning the NNEC Christmas tournament for the second year in a row.

Kendra MacKinnon and Jamie McCarron led North Nova with 14 and 10 points respectively, while Danielle Young led the Amherst Vikettes with 16 points.

In the third quarter North Nova had the lead once, leading by as much as three points (46-43), but when Amherst regained the lead with 5:51 remaining in the game they were unable to come back.

“They came out and really put the pressure on us and it took us awhile to adjust to it so we were rushing and their press really worked in increasing our tempo a little bit and we kind of lost control,” said Anne Armstrong about her team’s third quarter. “It took us a little too long to regain our composure.”

Losing a lead like they did and their tournament final wasn’t something the team was happy about, but they were all looking at it in a positive light moving forward.

“It was a terrific experience for us and that was one of the best games we’ve been in all year and Amherst is probably in the top 10 teams in the province, so for us to be that competitive with them is just a great experience for our team,” she said. “For us it’s a lot of team bonding and having those common experiences together. We really have some stuff we focus on every game, such as boxing out and that was a big factor in why we were so successful today.

“Every game we just try to focus on different things to get better and better to build for the next game and the end of the season.”
