Locals vying for banners in championship games at Westville Sports Centre

WESTVILLE – The 38th chapter of the Westville Miners Christmas Tournament is set to wrap up Monday, with five championship banners on the line.

Jeffrey Allen, left, of the Westville Miners and Gary Jones of the Thornburn Goldenhawks battle for the puck during the peewee rec semifinal game Sunday morning at the Westville Miners Sports Centre. Thorburn defeated Westville 8-3 to advance to today’s final.

It all came down to how the teams played on Sunday as to whether they were into the final day of the four-day tournament and for the Thorburn Goldenhawks they have the opportunity to win the peewee rec championship for 2013.

Sunday they beat the host Westville Miners 8-3 in their division semifinal to advance to the final against the Pictou County girl’s team. Puck drop is 12:30 p.m. today.

Scoring for Thorburn yesterday were: Christian Dewar, Gary Jones, Caleb Coolen (3), Hunter Fitzpatrick (2) and Haylee Hodgson.

Jeffrey Allen scored twice for the Miners, while Jordan Tran scored their third goal.

“We’re pretty excited,” said Goldenhawks goalie Tanner McIvor about making today’s final.

In his first Westville Miners Christmas Tournament he said he has been enjoying it so far.

Going into Sunday’s game he said the coaches told the team they had to do a good job of putting pressure on the other team.

“Every time they came down the ice I was just thinking that they can’t shoot at what they can’t see, so I was trying to get to the top of my crease to make it harder to score,” said McIvor.

Although they’ve played three games in three days he said it’s not too tough on them.

“We’re pretty excited to go to the championship and want to win,” he said. “It’s not tough playing a lot.”

Today he said he’s going to make sure he stays focused all game again. When he doesn’t get a lot of shots he said he just makes sure he follows the puck to stay focused.

“If I don’t have a lot of shots I just try to make sure I’m ready by watching the puck and when they come in make sure it’s hard for them to score by coming out to the top of the circle.”
