NEW GLASGOW – The sounds of children’s laughter and play will soon be heard on the newest additions to the playground of the Ward One Centre in New Glasgow.

Workers from Eastern Fence in Dartmouth pour concrete Wednesday to support the structure of new playground equipment being installed at the Ward One Centre in New Glasgow. The Town of New Glasgow indicated it will be a few weeks before playground equipment from the South End playground will be relocated at the centre. The completion date is slated for this fall. But for now, it’s the sound of heavy machinery and slosh of fresh concrete as new playground equipment is installed.

“It’s been quite a while waiting for the process to begin but installation has started,” said Geralyn MacDonald, New Glasgow’s community development director.

Eastern Fence is undertaking the project to install new equipment and relocate existing equipment from the South End playground. The company is one of few with strict playground construction certification.

“Not just anyone can do the work,” said Norma MacLeod, recreation co-ordinator for the town. “They had 13 jobs in HRM ahead of us so we’re pleased work has started.”

The new piece is expected to be installed by the end of this week. Once this construction wraps up, they will start dismantling pieces of the current South End playground.

“It should take a month to disassemble the equipment since each piece must be taken apart and reassembled,” said MacLeod. “It’s tedious work but it has to be done.”

About 13 years ago, the South End playground was built with community donations. The playground was unique because it catered to the needs of persons with disabilities by having a rubber mat cover the ground and having large swing chairs and modernized plastic slides and gyms.

However, in 2011 and again in 2012, a play structure at the playground was vandalized by fire. Council reordered new modern equipment to replace the burned structure, but decided it would face less chance of being vandalized if it was near the Ward One Community Centre.

Unlike the South End playground’s rubber surface, the playground at the Ward One Centre will be pea stone.

Funds to relocate the playground, provide new equipment and the pea stone surface came from the $61,000 paid from insurance from the South End playground vandalism and $41,000 from the town’s capital budget.

This is ridiculous this park has been here forever. Just because a few stupid people burnt it down if police potroled the area instead of driving around places they dont need to be ward 1 is in no better location what kids are going to be allowed to walk there? Maybe you should have asked the public first. So now what happens to where the southend park is? It becomes another vacant space in new glasgow.
