WESTVILLE – Last year Luc Lochead attended the provincial bodybuilding championships and decided it was something he wanted to do – under a year later he placed first in the lightweight division at his first competition.
Now the 21-year-old River John native, who currently lives in Westville, has his eyes on this year’s provincial championship March 29 in Halifax. With the competition approximately six weeks out he said he is doing more cardio and cutting carbohydrates.
“Right now it’s at the point where I need to be really strict with what I eat and my workouts,” he said. “It’s all up to me whether I follow it, so that I can do well at provincials.”
His goal is to finish in the top three after seeing how he placed at the East Coast Classic. He said going into that event that he didn’t know where he would have a chance of finishing, but believes this time around a top three finish is realistic. Lochead knows there will be tougher competition, but feels he can do it.
“I just wanted to go and do it and wasn’t thinking about where I would place,” said Lochead. “Now I’m feeling a little pressure going into provincials knowing that I have to do good again.”
His whole life he has been into physical activity whether it was archery, paintball or hockey, but it wasn’t until five years ago that he started working out. He said seeing some of the locals at the provincial event made it something he wanted to be able to say he could do.
“By doing that competition it gave me something to push for because I hadn’t really done anything that I had set goals for recently,” said Lochead. “It’s definitely different from things I’ve done in the past because I’m used to more teamwork where it isn’t just yourself. Now that I’ve been doing it for a bit I’m getting more used to it.”
Things are also a little more serious this time for provincials as he now has a coach, Greg Doucette from Halifax. He said that has helped with his training and preparation as Doucette has won the national championship before.
For this competition Lochead has also slightly injured himself during training for the first time. He said he agitated his shoulder this week, which has forced him to alter his schedule slightly.
“I don’t want to do anything that could make things worse with us being just six weeks out, so I’ll just focus on my cardio and legs for the next few days and hopefully my shoulder will start to feel better and I’ll be back on my regular schedule again,” he said.
Through this process there has been a lot learned about the sport and his body. It’s not as easy as it looks according to Lochead.
“It takes a lot of discipline and dedication to do it,” he said. “There is quite a bit more to it than you think. It’s all about when you eat, what you eat and all the workouts you do.”
He also added, laughing slightly, that if it wasn’t for his girlfriend Danielle Clarke that he wouldn’t be doing as well as he is with bodybuilding.
“I definitely couldn’t do it without her,” he said. “She helps me with the meal prep and kicking me when I don’t want to get out of bed. She’s thinking of getting into it herself, but right now she’s helping me stay on track with it all.”
