TRURO – The Special Olympics Pictou County floor hockey team brought home silver from the Cobequid Floor Hockey Tournament this past weekend.

They started the tournament Saturday morning against the Kings Red Rabbits. At the end of regulation the game was tied 1-1. Pictou County would win the game by a goal in the shootout.

That afternoon they played Charlottetown in their second game of the day. This game was also tied 1-1 after regulation, sending the game to a shootout, which the Bulldogs won for the second game in a row.

Pictou County had the rest of the day off, playing their third game Sunday morning against Cobequid. Pictou County again broke a 1-1 tie in a shootout to advance to the gold medal game.

The Lunenburg Queens Vipers got off to a quick start in the final against the Bulldogs, going ahead 2-0 in the first period, something the Bulldogs had not been faced with all weekend.

The Bulldogs struggled to come back and the Vipers went ahead 4-0 in the second period.

Pictou County held them scoreless in the third period, but had two goals scored called back due to being in the crease and high sticking. The Bulldogs answered with a good goal, but could not rally a comeback beyond that with time running out.

The Bulldogs fought hard all weekend and were able to win in shootouts due to the sharp shooting of Greg Massaro, Allister MacLean and Craig Boyd as well as the incredible goaltending of Derek Saunders who was a brick wall for any team shooting against him.

Saunders’ talent continued in the shootout competition where he earned the top goalie award in the B Division.

Cathy Mason, Special Olympics Pictou County Sports Coordinator, believes this is at least Saunder’s fourth win in this competition, which goes to show he is capable of shutting down offence when needed most.

Special Olympics Pictou County curlers will be sending two teams to a day tournament on April 5 in Bedford.
