BRIDGEWATER – The Thorburn peewee B Golden Hawks captured bronze in Bridgewater at provincials over the weekend.
Thorburn posted a 2-1-1 recorded through the round-robin and Hockey Nova Scotia had to use goals for and against to decided the teams that would advance to the final. Although Thorburn's wins came in regulation and the competitions did not, the format bumped the Golden Hawks out of the championship game.
The Golden Hawks opened the tournament with a 4-4 tie against TASA Gold.
The second game was against the host South Shore team and the Golden Hawks skated to a 6-3 win. The only loss the Golden Hawks suffered came at the hands of TASA Black who took advantage of a tired bench, winning 5-2.
In what ended up being their final game of the tournament, the Golden Hawks came to play in the second game of the day and defeated Cape Breton 5-3.
After round-robin play, Thorburn was awarded the bronze medals in the closing ceremonies.
Adam Macdonald was named as one of two tournament defensive all-stars, while Aaren MacDonald took top honors in the showdown shootout in the skills competition. The Golden Hawks relied on the goaltending from both Brandon Benoit and Liam Chisholm all weekend.
