The North Nova Gryphons Boys hockey team took the Division 1 Banner Thursday night in Truro with a 4-2 victory over the CEC Cougars.
The Gryphons were bolstered by the large number of fans who made the trip over Mt Thom to cheer on the North Nova squad. There was no scoring in the first period but the Cougars scored in the first minute of the second frame to take the lead.
The Gryphons responded quickly 32 seconds later on a blast from the point by Ryan Chabbassol on a feed from Ryan MacDonald to even the game at 1. MacDonald put the Gryphons ahead midway through the second with a shorthanded goal assisted by Darryl Wheadon. Tyler Baird opened the third period with a breakaway goal assisted by Craig Murray and Wheadon.
Truro pressed for another goal and finally beat netminder Joel MacLean with a puck that barely trickled over the line. With two minutes remaining in the game, North Nova took a penalty but the Gryphons managed to keep control of the puck and Wheadon scored an unassisted short handed empty net goal with 23 seconds left in the game to seal the win. The NNEC squad received the Regional Banner and will advance to provincial play downs in Upper Tantallon at the St. Margaret's Centre March 21-23.
