On the hunt for hockey gold
The Peewee AA Subway Selects are into the provincial championship game.
The second weekend of the Donald Keddy Memorial Hockey Tournament wrapped up on Sunday with what organizers said was a game worthy of a championship match.
In the first semifinal, Hunters, winners of the A Division were beat 4-3 in a shootout by Danglers (Halifax), winners of B Division. Berwick (Westville), winners of D Division put out the Westville Four Stars, winners of C Division in the second semifinal.
The championship game between the Danglers and Berwick looked like it was going to be a cake-walk for the Danglers when they were leading 3-0 within the first six minutes, and by the end of the first period they were up 5-1.
However, Berwick wasn’t finished like a lot of spectators thought because things changed shortly after the start of the second period when Berwick put in four unanswered goals to tie the game 5-5.
The spectators were treated to an exciting finish when the Danglers went up 6-5 only to have Berwick tie it up once more. Again the Danglers went ahead, but Berwick tied it up 7-7.
Unfortunately, success was not in the cards for Berwick because the Danglers scored the winning goal with three minutes remaining. Try as they did, coming close on a couple of tries, they could not score and the Danglers won the Gentlemen’s Division trophy and the game 8-7.
