NEW GLASGOW – It’s time to play for all the marbles.
The Pictou County Rugby Club’s women have advanced to the Division 2 provincial final after defeating Truro 56-10 on Saturday at home to open the club’s weekend action.
Just a year ago the women’s team was reintroduced to Pictou County and in their first season back they didn’t make the playoffs, but did string together a few wins to end the regular season. This year they finished 7-0-0 in regular season Div. 2 action.
“It was a huge wins for the girls team, the first playoff game the Pictou County Rugby Club has ever had in the women’s division,” said club coach Scott Taylor. “They won it quite handily against a tough opponent, one of their top rivals - the Truro Rugby Club – so they must be really happy with that victory for sure.”
Tanisha Campbell led the team offensively with four tries. Isobel DeMont, Alyssa Canning, Jessica Deagle and Shelby MacDonald all scored one try apiece, while Keeley MacCuish added a try and a drop goal. Deagle also kicked four conversions.
Friday the women will host Enfield for the provincial championship. The expected start time is 6:30 p.m. at the Scott Weeks Sports Complex.
Division 2 Men
The lone team yet to complete the regular season, the men’s Div. 2 team, picked up important points over the weekend with a 35-5 victory over the Valley Bulldogs.
Pictou County was in a three-way tie for first going into the weekend with two games in hand. With the win they picked up five points, which Taylor expects will put them in a good position to have home-field advantage in the playoffs.
“We just need to keep our game flowing the way it has been,” said Taylor. “We have to really work on our defence, specifically our line speed and trying to get up into their face so we can take time and space away from them. That way they will hopefully create mistakes for the other team.”
Jordan MacNeil scored two tries for Pictou County, with Darrell Frazee, Chase Kirkendall, Corey Bennett and Brendan Works all scoring single tries. Kris Works kicked a penalty and a conversion.
Next weekend they travel to Windsor for a game on Saturday.
Division 3 Men
Wrapping up their regular season in style, the Div. 3 men picked up a pair of victories over the weekend.
They finished off the Pictou County Rugby Club’s tripleheader on Saturday with a 41-22 victory over Riverlake.
Scoring tries for the county were: Jordan Hamilton, Josh Mullholland, Brandon Works (2), Steve MacNeil (2) and Bennett. Evan MacDonald had three conversions.
On Sunday they defeated Halifax Rugby Club 48-20.
MacDonald led offensively with five conversions and one penalty kick.
Scoring tries for the locals were: Mullholland, Doug Ross, Bennett (2), Brendan Works, Dana O’Brien and Thomas Smith.
Taylor, who is in his third season of coaching the club’s men, said there has been a big change in that time.
“We came from one team with 20-25 players to a club,” said Taylor. “We’re a genuine club now with two solid teams with roughly 45 players in the men’s division and a solid ladies team with roughly 30 girls there. From when I started – and I’m not saying it’s because of me, it’s just the way it happened to be – we came from one team to an entire club, which is awesome.”
