Another shot at the title

Norma Marshall is set for another trip to nationals.

TRENTON – For about a year now, Norma Marshall has been thinking about getting another shot at a women’s Canadian boxing title.

“Since the last one really, I’ve been thinking about going back and what I was going to need to do,” said the 25-year-old Westville resident, who will fight in the 64K division at the Canadian boxing championships, being held next week in Quebec City next week.

Marshall won four nationals titles as a teenager, and won a silver medal in the Women’s Elite division at the 2016 nationals.

“It’ll be the usual plan: to go in there and box as hard as I can, listen to the coaches and do what they tell me.”

Fellow Albion Amateur Boxing Club member Matthew Fraser will be making his first trip into nationals, fighting in the 48K division. Fraser won a gold medal at the prestigious Brampton Cup in early February, and was selected to be a member of Team Nova Scotia for nationals by head coach Wayne Gordon and Albion coach Al Archibald, who will act as an assistant coach in Quebec City, along with Cape Breton coach Mike Gerrow.

Matthew Fraser spars during a session at the Albion Amateur Boxing Club this week.

After a four-year break from the sport, Marshall made a return to boxing two years ago, and her only loss in 10 fights since then was in the 2016 gold medal match against Miriam Da Silva, a seven-time national champion.

There will be four other boxers in Marshall’s weight class in the Quebec capital, among them being Sara Kali, the reigning Canadian champion, who is ranked third in the world.

“If it ends up being Norma and Sara in the gold medal match, it will be an absolute war. Norma has a shot to win any time,” Archibald said.

“She came within a point of beating Da Silva last year.”

Archibald has high hopes for both of his boxers, who will make the trip to Quebec City next Sunday night.

“Matt already has surprised us when we sent him to the Brampton Cup, and I’m hoping he’ll surprise us again and win gold. Both Norma and Matt are ready for this.”

The Albion club is also preparing to host a card on May 6 at Summer Street Industries.
