STELLARTON – Breanna Sandluck wasn’t expecting to make the provincial team that will travel to Winnipeg later this month for the Canada Summer Games.

She was in for a very pleasant shock.

“My mom got a text telling her to check the Canada Games list,” said the 17-year-old Thorburn resident, who competes in the steeplechase.

“She called me and said ‘apparently, you are on it.’ I saw my name there and I was very surprised.”
Sandluck, who is heading into her senior year at North Nova Education Centre, is one of eight local athletes representing Nova Scotia in track and field.

“I’m nervous,” about the thought of competing at the Canada Games, she said, just before heading for a workout at the Pioneer Coal Track and Field facility this week.

“Nervous, but excited.”

Logan Coulet is another athlete from Pictou County who, to his surprise, found himself joining Team Nova Scotia.

“I didn’t expect to go at all,” he says. “It was a dream of mine, but I wasn’t expecting it.”

The 19-year-old student at Acadia University started taking the high jump seriously when he was in Grade 11 and now, just a couple of years later, he’ll be wearing his province’s colours in Manitoba.

“It feels amazing a dream come true. I’m honoured to be able to represent Nova Scotia.”
