New Glasgow Kinsmen Wendys/Tim Hortons Peewee AA win Atlantics

OROMOCTO, N.B. - The New Glasgow Kinsmen Peewee AAs have bragging rights as 2007 Atlantic Champions, beating Cornwall, P.E.I. in the championship match in Oromocto N.B.

The team faced competitors from across the Maritimes, from New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia as well as the Island.

The final came right down to the wire. Cornwall loaded the bases at the top of the seventh, leading 6-2, but New Glasgow came through on a big double play to end the game.

Tommy Hayman said the Cornwall hitter knocked a short ball down the line. New Glasgow tagged home for a forced out and threw it off for the double play.

Allister Mason pitched the winner with relief from Brent Turnbull.

Turnbull also turned three hits for New Glasgow, while Hayman, Riley Bennett and Mason had two. Mason and Turnbull earned game MVP.

The Kinsmen also faced Cornwall in their first match, downing them 14-3 in five innings. Mason recorded the win on the mound. Top batters in this game were Steven MacNeil, with four hits, including a three-run homerun. He tallied six RBI's during the game. Craig Murray and Mason had two hits, Evan MacDonald, Geoff Arbuckle and Hayman had one each. MVP honours went to MacNeil.

In their second game, New Glasgow defeated Gander, NL, 17-4 with Murray pitching the win. Top batters were MacNeil with four hits, Arbuckle with three including, a two-run homer and Murray had three hits. Allister Mason had a three-run homerun, Cory Fraser had two hits while Logan Boudreau and Bennett had one each. Game MVP was Murray.

In the Kinsmen's third game, they suffered their only loss, 9-7, to Saint John, NB, in a game that had to be completed on Sunday due to rain. Top hitters were Arbuckle, MacNeil and Fraser with two hits each, while Turnbull, Hayman, Mason, Bennett, and Murray had a hit each. Game MVP was Riley Bennett.

The Kinsmen won their fourth game against hosting Oromocto, which moved them into the championship match against Cornwall 4-1. Mason was the winning pitcher while Hayman earned the save and the MVP award.

The Kinsmen finished the season with a record of 30-7-2 and scored 402 runs, giving up 160 all season. The team would like to thank Wendy's/Tim Hortons, Sobeys and the Kinsmen Club for their donations to help out with the weekend.
