PICTOU

County council has voted against giving the Pictou County Scotians any financial sponsorship this year.

The sponsorship request from the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League club came before finance committee Monday, as Coun. Andy Thompson made a motion that $1,000 be given to the team in the form of a municipal grant.

Some councillors noted that the request has come after council debated whether the Jr. A Crushers should received a $1,000 grant.

In October, county councilors voted in favour of the $1,000 at a finance committee meeting, but then voted against it when it needed to be finalized at council on Nov. 6.

Coun. Andy Thompson said the request from the Scotians hockey team has nothing to do with the Crushers request, and he added that council could do the right thing and support both teams.

At the Nov. 6 meeting, councillors David Parker and Peter Boyles both said they heard from constituents opposed to the idea of giving the Crushers a grant, although Thompson recently told The News that no complaints had been directed at him prior to the Nov. 6 vote.

The motion to grant the Scotians $1,000 was defeated in a vote of 6 to 4.
