ST. JOHN'S, N.L. – Skip Adam Casey and his Saskatchewan foursome scored five in the sixth end Tuesday to break open a tie game and defeat Ontario 9-5 in eight ends at the Tim Hortons Brier in St. John’s, N.L.

The victory pushed Saskatchewan, skipped by the Seven Mile Bay native, to 4-3 while Glenn Howard is 1-5.

Saskatchewan scored three in the first and a single in the fourth while Ontario countered with deuces in the third and the fifth to tie it. Ontario scored a single in the seventh.

Saskatchewan defeated New Brunswick’s Mike Kennedy 7-6 in 11 ends earlier in the day.

With the game tied 4-4 through seven, Saskatchewan scored two in the eighth only to see New Brunswick score singles the next two ends.

Saskatchewan plays Nova Scotia and Canada today at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Charlottetown native Brett Gallant and his Newfoundland and Labrador team lost 8-4 Tuesday morning to the Northwest Territories, but rebounded to defeat Northern Ontario 7-5 in the evening draw. They are 4-2.

Against the Northwest Territories (Jamie Koe), the game was tied 4-4 after eight ends. The Northwest Territories scored one in the ninth and stole a triple in the 10th.

The Brad Gushue-skipped Newfoundland squad led Northern Ontario (Brad Jacobs) 5-2 through six ends. Jacobs scored a deuce in the seventh, but Gushue responded with two of his own and held Jacobs to a single in the ninth.

Newfoundland plays Quebec today at 7 p.m.
