THORBURN
The North Nova Education Centre girls hockey team has won the NSSAF Northumberland Regional Championship for Division 1 schools.
The Gryphons captured the 2017-2018 banner on Wednesday afternoon at the Ivor MacDonald Memorial Arena after defeating the Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals in a best-of-three-games series.
The first game took place on Monday in Thorburn, resulting in a 7-1 win for the New Glasgow high school. Scoring for the Gryphons were Camryn Halliday with a hat trick, Lindsey MacDonald with two goals, and Heath Miller and Rhea Young with one goal apiece. KJ Emery recorded two assists, and Miller, Young, Caitlin Taylor, Shalyn Bona and Garyn Purvis each had one.
In Wednesday’s 5-3 game, also in Thorburn, Keighan DeCoff scored twice and earned an assist, while Young, Breanna Sandluck and Taylor Long got single goals. Assists were also marked by Bona, Paige MacDonald, Ashley MacDonald, Taylor and Young.
Victoria Dunn backstopped the team in both games.
Winning the regional championship qualifies the NNEC team to play in the NSSAF provincial championship, which will be hosted by Avon View High School in Windsor in late March.
